Not wanting their subscribers to miss a moment of their amazing line-ups, DStv (with the help of the DStv Online team) launched their new website, DStv On Demand, on 14 June 2011. The site allows DStv Premium subscribers to watch programming they may have missed online for up to 7 days after the show has aired. Wanting to know more about this pioneering service, we sat down with Christiaan, DStv On Demand’s product manager, to discuss the new DStv On Demand website and what it means for DStv subscribers.

What to expect from On Demand

1. In what way has the website and service changed?
• The website features a new look and feel and is open to all Internet Service Providers (ISP’s).
• Over 200 hours of movies, sport, miniseries and current affairs shows each month to Premium subscribers.
• The new DStv Desktop Player supports both Windows and Mac users.

2. What can viewers / users expect from the all new On Demand brand / website?

From a brand point of view we changed the name from CatchUp to DStv On Demand. There is still some work to be done to remove any reference to CatchUp and we planning to have the new name integrated with the new website and partner sites in the next month or two. From a website point of view, there are a few enhancements we’d like to implement to increase the user experience even further. We are also looking at adding more hours of content on On Demand to give our Premium subscribers more choice.

3. What has the response been like so far?

We haven’t done any aggressive marketing yet but the uptake so far has been good. The traffic is increasing week-on-week and because you can link your smartcard number regardless of your ISP, it is a big advantage for our broader base of customers to make use of our online platform.

4. What can viewers / users expect from the On Demand team in the coming months?

Website enhancements, more hours of programming and an online and TV campaign to get the DStv on Demand brand out in the market.

Behind the Scenes

5. What’s an ‘average day in the office’ for you?

Preparation, lots of meetings, research on ideas I’d like to implement, revision of marketing and development work from internal or external parties and general admin that comes with the job.

6. What do you find most fulfilling about your job?

The fact that each day is different. Broadcasting is a dynamic and evolving industry and we need to be at the forefront all the time in all departments. From negotiating rights with studios to using the latest technology on all our platforms – at the end of the day, all the departments need to be integrated to deliver a product that adds value to our customers and which is a “differentiator” compared to our competitors. Contributing to a product that is born from an idea and turns into something tangible is very fulfilling.

7. What are your highlights from working for DStv Online?

Seeing the new On Demand website go live, the environment and people and the opportunity to create new (and build on existing) products going forward.
